Apps Based on Children's Books Prove Fertile Marketplace

For Oceanhouse Media (OM), a publisher of apps for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, licensing relationships with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, Hay House Publishers and Chronicle Books have helped it to become a player in the children's book space. With the company's recent announcement that the children's classic “ Green Eggs and Ham” was now available for purchase at the App Store, Oceanhouse Media reached a milestone: 100 apps published. After just one week of release, the “Green Eggs and Ham” e-book app achieved its own milestone—it reached the No. 1 position on the App Store book charts for both the iPad and the iPhone....

"The Lorax" from Oceanhouse Media is a vivid rendition of the Dr. Seuss classic, with some nice features to assist early-readers. The app lets you read "The Lorax" like a traditional book, but with fun atmospheric sound effects like the sound of wind blowing and old crows cawing. With my son, I choose another option that reads the book to him in a narrator's voice. Words on the page were highlighted as the narrator said them...

For a child learning to read, Dr. Seuss has been imported nicely into the 21st century in the form of “Dr. Seuss’s ABC and The Cat in the Hat” ($2.99 each, Oceanhouse Media). Children can swipe their way through the classic illustrations, but what’s really special is that you can make the words zoom out of the text, and land on the pictures, strengthening word/object association... This is especially fun for words like “fifer-feffer-feff.” Oceanhouse also lists two other Dr. Seuss titles on its site: “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” and “The Lorax.”

Overall, I think The Lorax is (Oceanhouse Media's) best effort to date. Dr. Seuss’ story is timeless and just as appropriate now as when it was published in 1971. The Cat in the Hat — Dr. Seuss (4 stars out of 4)

Lovingly recreated, this Dr. Seuss classic shines as an example of how to transfer a beloved classic book into an app. This version retains all of the original artwork and is read aloud as words highlight on the screen. When you tap on the illustrations, the words from the story zoom over to the object touched, helping kids to make the connection between the words and the objects. The narrator is gifted, particularly when he takes on the voice of the Cat in the Hat.

Michel Kripalani started making e-books when e-books weren't cool. A veteran creator of video games, Kripalani began developing downloadable digital books about a year ago. At the time, Apple's App Store (AAPL), an online software application marketplace, boasted thousands of game apps and merely 700 book-related titles. "If everyone is growing corn, maybe it's time to grow soy," he figured.

Kripalani is glad he switched. E-books are booming now, with book-related apps outnumbering those dedicated to games. His company, Oceanhouse Media, sells three of the 10 best-selling book apps in the App Store...

Oceanhouse Media bootstraps a sustainable business on the iPhone and iPad

Neophyte game developers have viewed the iPhone as a gold rush — an opportunity to get rich building games that don’t have to go through all of the traditional filters that publishers and retailers put in the way of startups.

But Michel Kripalani, president of Oceanhouse Media in San Diego, Calif., has been through a gold rush before in the early days of video games. He figured out the way to succeed on the iPhone is to publish lots of games and electronic books under license from big names such as Dr. Seuss. Each one of the apps may sell in small numbers, but the sheer volume of apps is enough to generate a diverse portfolio of products that keeps business humming along.

The storybook application “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” is based on the original book by Theodor Geisel – most commonly known as Dr. Seuss. As with many of Seuss’ early books, there isn’t much “story” to this story, yet the clever, poetic lyrics and fantastical creatures aptly capture the imagination and wonderment of readers of all ages. For early readers, “One Fish…” keeps their attention through clever rhyme and offers lessons through word association and word comprehension...

Dr. Seuss on my iPhone was great, my son loved it but The Lorax on my iPad is out of this world! This ebook is just more good stuff from Oceanhouse Media, see my previous post on The Cat In The Hat. The Lorax is the same well designed reader with a new story. It is intuitive for young children to operate and gives them the options of reading on their own or being read to, again I could not over emphasize the importance of reading and being read to when learning to read. The Cat In the Hat FINALLY Taught Me How to Read! (Video Review)

Everyone has talked about the iPad’s ability to up the ante on eBook readers, and I couldn’t agree more. But the device can also do things with books that Kindle and Nook have only dreamed of.

The Cat in the Hat is a great example of what I’m talking about. Using the book’s original text and artwork, the app allows users to enjoy the original Seuss book by reading alone or reading along with a narrator. Plus with interactive images, read along highlighting and simple animation, this app has the potential to actually teach kids as they’re being entertained. What a noble concept.

TapCritic, Apr 29, 2010

Reading an AOL News story today that 13 of the 16 top book applications for the iPad are children's titles, I began getting a little light-headed. That time, "somewhere down the road," when kids will be reading picture books on handheld computers and we'll all be flying jetpacks to work, well, it's here. Mostly.

But I still couldn't wrap my brain around what it all means. So I got in touch with Oceanhouse Media, the publisher of the Dr. Seuss apps that are among the most popular downloads. Surely he could calm me down about the iPad, picture book apps, e-books, and what this all means.

"It's a complete revolution in the way children's books will be published," said Michel Kripalani, president of Oceanhouse Media...

iPhone/iPad app, The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, Exceptionally Well Done

I can not rave more about OceanHouse Media’s Dr. Seuss iPhone app books and iPad app books. They really get it. The ebook is a different medium than a print book and therefore should have different — ENHANCED — functionality that truly makes it a different, and yes, possibly better, experience than a traditional book...

Everyone loves the fun rhymes, silly text and timeless illustrations in the classic children’s books by Dr. Seuss! A collection of those books are now available for you and your kids to enjoy in the App Store.

I reviewed The Cat in the Hat and The Lorax and really enjoyed them. These well known stories combine education and entertainment into one complete app package and promise to keep your little ones busy for hours. Each book has three options for reading...

I liked Dr. Seuss books as a kid. But now that Oceanhouse Media is bringing Dr. Seuss to life on the iPod, iPad and iPhone, I absolutely love the digital e-books! The Dr. Seuss classic "The Lorax" comes to the iPhone as the “The Lorax” app, which is now available to download for $3.99, a fraction of the price of the hardcopy book...

Dr. Seuss Senders iPhone app review

With 100 cards in the iPhone app, you won’t run out of clever follow-up emails for months to come. Considering the average “You did it!” card at Hallmark costs approximately $5 these days, $2.99 for 100 cards is a bargain.

I immediately send my college friend, who is lovingly nicknamed "Fish," the “Hot fish, cool fish, you fish, RULE fish!” card. When my man was on a business trip, I sent him the “Say…hope you’re having fun today. I miss you when you are away!” ...

Another quality children’s storybook, The Lorax – Dr. Seuss Oceanhouse Media, that definitely gives you your money’s worth. The app is available for iPhone, iTouch or iPad. I just sat down with my boys before nap and chose “read to me” mode. The only issues – I was falling asleep and forgetting to swipe to turn the page before the 25 minute story was over. Now that’s not because the story was boring, but because it was so long and the kiddos wear me out! ...

Dr. Seuss has gone high tech. Have you got an iPhone or an iPod? Check out the books and apps available from Oceanhouse Media. They are really well done, especially when you look at what other books for kids are available on iPhone/iPod (there are some good ones, but there are some stinky ones too).

I've downloaded and installed Dr. Seuss's ABC's, The Lorax and The Lorax Garden app. Both of the books are wonderful for kids...

Five apps to celebrate Earth Day

The Lorax – Dr. Seuss is a wonderful ebook that’s perfect for Earth Day! It’s about a character who cuts down all the trees in the forest to make clothes. The Lorax warns him that his actions are hurting everyone, but he doesn’t listen. There’s a great moral to the story that will certainly engage young minds to help Mother Nature more. It’s a great story with beautiful animations and a narrator who reads to you!

The graphics and sound effects in Lorax Garden are very Seussical and well done. My seven year old daughter picked it up, got the hang of it without any trouble and has been planting trees and flowers most of the afternoon. It’s not a fast paced app but she’s been playing with it for most of the afternoon so I’d say it’s a hit...

Just in time for Earth day! Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax has been brought to iPhones and iPads by Oceanhouse Media. My son and I tried the e-book out on the iPad and the graphics were fantastic. Dr. Seuss Senders- 100 fantabulous cheer-ups and quotes to share!

The Lorax Review - I enjoy the movement and interactive features of this app; as you read the story (or have it read to you), you pan around the page to have a more detailed look at the illustrations, and you can tap on some of the images to see the identifying words. “The Lorax” is an engaging and entertaining storybook, but it also provides a valuable opportunity for parents and children to discuss conservation and environmental concerns in our world today...

GiggleApps, Apr 21, 2010

The Lorax’s Garden app from Oceanhouse Media will have your kids growing their own digital truffula trees and planting lots of grickle grass ’cause “unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not”. The app is absolutely fantastic, one of the best iPhone games we’ve ever played. The Bear has never been so engrossed in an app before. Ever. We played it together for over an hour last night instead of reading books at bedtime (I know, I know). In Lorax’s Garden, you succeed in regrowing Weehawken, South Stitch and other Lorax lands and begin to see Swomee Swans, Humming Fish and Bar-ba-loots (in their bar-ba-loot suits!) return to the forests. It’s repetitive action; planting, watering, weeding, etc, but each new level brings new flowers, new varieties and colors of truffula trees and new characters from the book. Spend the (money) and buy this app today.

Out With The Kids, Apr 21, 2010

Oh no! All the Truffula Trees have died! You must now help the Lorax in an effort to bring them all back. The Lorax Garden is the what some would call the sequel to The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. Oceanhouse Media did a good job timing the release of it, as Earth Day is just around the corner. If you have not had a chance to read The Lorax it is available as an e-book on the app store. If you have not read the book it ends in saying we must do something to the save the trees or we will live in a world of hurt...

The Lorax is a classic story way ahead of its time that is still current in today’s world where the ecological warning is becoming more pressing. Just in time for Earth Day, Oceanhouse Media has two new app offerings for the iPhone and iPod Touch. “The Lorax“, Dr. Seuss’s classic story, and “The Lorax Garden“, a game based off The Lorax are available for purchase via iTunes.

The original story of The Lorax centers around a narrator who clear cuts some magestic trees in order to produce a mass-market Thneed. The Lorax issues warnings, speaking on behalf of the trees but the narrator doesn’t listen. It is a tale to be kind to Mother Nature and our resources, and not just for Earth Day but for every day. Oceanhouse Media has brought Dr. Seuss to life on the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad. The classic books take on a new life thanks to the interactive nature of these apps. Combining the beautiful original artwork of the books with innovative features that promote reading in young children, these apps are sure to be a hit with families everywhere.

Family Gamer Online, Apr 16, 2010

Three classic books that find their most impressive canvasses on the iPad. In each case, Oceanhouse Media has taken a colorful, art-driven title that would not have worked in Apple’s iBooks application—as it currently is, at least—and gives it everything from full voice narration, played automatically or turned off as you wish, to animated and spoken word pop-ups that identify the pictures on the screen. On the iPad, the experiences are better than having the actual books on hand, with pages rendered at roughly the original size and full resolution, while the iPod touch and iPhone pages are identical in visuals, sonics, and interactivity, only smaller. Though none of these electronic books dramatically evolves Dr. Seuss’s content beyond its original 2-D form, they all do as good a job of presenting what was originally there as any parent could hope for.

iLounge, Apr 9, 2010

Random House publishes the print versions of Dr. Seuss's titles, but app maker Oceanhouse Media licensed the iPad and iPhone rights to the entire collection from Dr. Seuss Enterprises. So far it has launched three apps (The Cat in the Hat, Dr. Seuss's ABC, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas). Within the next few weeks, it will also introduce The Lorax as two separate apps (a book and a game).

Oceanhouse sells games separately because its president, Michel Kripalani, thinks that's what Theodor Geisel would have wanted. "Ted Geisel was all about teaching kids how to read. Every feature we put into this book has to support reading and teaching kids how to read." To wit, Oceanhouse's apps let kids touch an object, such as a hat, and see the word for it float forward. And as the narrator reads, the app highlights the corresponding text...

Oceanhouse has partnered up with Dr. Seuss Enterprises LLP, and they have done a remarkable job of turning these classics into apps. They put together an engine that they can plug any Dr. Seuss book into, since the apps all work exactly the same way. I don't think this was done to make it easier on themselves, but rather to address their market of ankle-biters. If you learn one, you've learned them all, and even for small children, mastering them is easy.

If you have kids just getting used to the concept of reading, I couldn't recommend these apps more highly, and I fully expect that in time the entire Seuss catalog will be along for the ride...

The Dr. Seuss apps are an easy recommendation to any parent of small children. These are not so much apps as enhanced e-books that are as good, if not better, than the original paper versions, and at $3, they are less expensive than buying the dead tree versions at the bookstore. Of course, even if you already own the original books, there’s no reason not to own these apps as well – they go together like Thing One and Thing Two...

For those and other times, I can't recommend Oceanhouse Media's Dr. Seuss e-books highly enough. Review Update: Grinchmas! by Oceanhouse Media

There are a couple of game play changes worthy of noting. The first is that there are actually two modes now: Classic and Challenge. Classic is the original game, which now even has easy, medium and hard modes. Challenge mode is the bright spot of this update, however. In the Mean Grinch scenario there are 20 challenges and in Merry Grinch mode there are 17. A challenge might be basic like "quiet 3 near noisy houses" in Mean scenario or "deliver 3 presents" in Merry mode. As you get further down the list, however, things get more difficult...

I absolutely got into the holiday spirit, loved to see the Grinch on my iPhone and now I'm warmly recommending it to all you Whos out there. It sells for $1.99 in the AppStore, a price that may be a bit steep if you're thinking it's just one game mode with two graphics. Nonetheless, the game is worth it even if only to have that nice Grinch icon on your iPhone...

Obviously, the fact that a narrator is at the ready to read the text makes this edition of the book more interactive than your average paperback. But there are other differences as well. When you turn to a page with a new picture, the static image will pan in or out, which makes it a bit more interesting. And there are cool sound effects, popping sounds and whistles and background music, for example, when the Whos start their infernal Who singing. (There is also an option to turn sound effects off.) The neatest thing, though, is that on each page a number of areas of the picture will be mapped, so that when you touch them the narrator will name what you've touched, and the name will zoom out of the picture in big red letters. If the item named appears in the text on that page, the zooming letters will emerge not from the picture but from the text itself.

Oceanhouse Media has been busy! First they came out with Grinchmas and Dr. Seuss Camera – The Grinch Edition. Then just last week they released How the Grinch Stole Christmas as an e-book app. Awesome! How the Grinch Stole Christmas is one of my favorite holiday tales.

This is a fantastic version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. We are loving all the Grinchiness on my iPhone right now. Thank you Oceanhouse Media…I’m hoping this is the beginning of much more Seuss to come for my iPhone!

5 Must Have Christmas Special iPhone Games and Apps

TouchReviews.net, Dec 13, 2009

I had a friend who actually shrieked “What, you had never read Dr Seuess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! when you were kid?!” LOL. My upbringing back then was typically British and that would mean reading material like J.R.R Tolkien and Enid Blyton in the same boat with English breakfast (which was a daily affair).

In any case, I actually had “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” read to me on Friday night. That’s right. The new e-book from Oceanhouse Media has a “Read to me” function and a very nice voice-over would narrate the story...

It’s nice to see a Dr. Seuss children’s book arrive on the iPhone in such a a fun and innovative way. How the Grinch Stole Christmas ($3.99, iTunes link) is the classic book with the original art and text along with some cool interactive features.

The book has a professional narrator that reads the book to you. Or, you can choose no narrator to read the book yourself. If you do choose the narrator, your child can follow along with the text, as words are highlighted as they are read. It’s a nice learning tool, as your child will learn to recognize the words....

The folks over at Oceanhouse Media have partnered with Dr. Seuss Enterprises to fill our holiday minds with the Grinch. The first app in the iTunes App Store is called "Grinchmas" [iTunes Link]. It's a simple game where you choose to be a mean or a merry Grinch. I, of course, chose to be mean the first time around... I found myself throwing snowballs at noisy houses with a goal of keeping the noise meter from reaching its max. Next, I tried the merry side: I was given presents and a timer and challenged to toss the most presents before the time ran out. It was a fun little game, good for true Grinch fans and a quick time waster...

I’m pretty sure my daughter as well as the million of kids who are allowed by their parents to use their iPhones would love this new iPhone app - “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Yes folks, it’s the classic Christmas tale from Dr. Seuss getting a fresh treatment by way of a cool iPhone app.

The good thing is, it’s not only just your ordinary kiddie iPhone game because it is sort of an interactive ebook as well. Your kids could learn about this classic tale by letting the app read the story to them or they can read them on their own.

The app is also an educational tool for kids...

'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' dazzles on iPhone

Somewhere, Theodor Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) is smiling. "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" for iPhone turns the classic tale into a superb interactive e-book, one that's as much a learning tool as it is an entertaining diversion...

CNET.com, Dec 11, 2009

Okay, I’m biased – I love the Grinch, so I was probably going to love this game regardless of how good it is. Actually, I pretty much love all things from that gentle madman, Theodor Geisel, also known as our friend, Dr. Seuss (a doctorate in what, I wonder?). But this set of two games is actually pretty good all on its own...

What makes for a more delightful Christmas then Dr. Suess? Well, Dr. Seuss and the Grinch means that Christmas this year is complete on your device. Oceanhouse Media have just released 3 wonderful apps, and their latest offering was approved yesterday on the AppStore and is “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” eBook.

Are you as excited as me? I couldn’t wait to get this downloaded and put on my iPhone. It has to be one of my all time favorite reads and for this review I will nab my youngest son and get him to read it to me! (It has two modes, one where there is a narrator and the other is where you read it like a traditional book...

Apps And Hats, Dec 11, 2009

As reported earlier this week, Oceanhouse Media is releasing a bunch of Dr. Seuss iPhone apps, the newest of which, just released today, is an enhanced eBook version of the classic 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas.' eBookNewser took a look at the app, which is clearly of the "let's make it more like a book than a video game" school of iPhone apps.

Oceanhouse sticks pretty close to the original book, with a few added bells and whistles. The title screen offers two choices: "Read it to me" or "Read it myself." The voiceover has a slightly sinister male British accent that rolls its R's, which is appropriate for Seuss's sinister sing-song rhymes...

Grinchmas Review for iPhone and iPod Touch

You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch! Well, not necessarily in Oceanhouse Media’s latest creation, Grinchmas for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It is a casual game suited for the whole family and depending on your mood; you can choose to be a mean or merry Mr. Grinch.

Grinchmas is a game with two variants; you can plays as a Mean Grinch or a Merry Grinch. If you choose to be mean, your job is to throw snowballs at those noisy Who houses during the night. If you choose to be merry, instead of throwing snowballs at the houses, you have to throw colored presents at the matching colored Who houses. The challenge is to throw either the most snowballs or presents and hit their designated targets before the clock runs out...

iPhone app developer Oceanhouse Media has announced the release of three Seuss Enterprises-licensed apps based on the Dr. Seuss classic 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas.' Two are games--'Grinchmas,' a kind of digital snowball fight; and 'The Dr. Seuss Camera-Grinch Edition,' a greeting-card maker--and are already available in the app store. The third, which the company says will be out in time for the holidays, is an e-book version of the book itself...

I know you’ll try to resist it, because the Dr. Seuss Camera-The Grinch Edition is $2.99. But you can’t. Because it’s Christmas and it’s the Grinch and you want to randomly email Grinch-themed Christmas cards with your face in them to your family and friends until they start classifying your emails as spam.

If there’s a person born in this country, or even on this planet, after the 50s who didn’t grow up reading Dr. Seuss books, then they’ve been living in a poorly heated cave in the middle of nowhere...

I’m addicted to the Grinchmas iPhone app

I’ve been playing Grinchmas a lot the last few days. I play while I’m putting Madelyn down for her nap, while she’s in the bathtub, and at other random times during the day. Granted, those times are short lived but still.. I turn to the Grinchmas app for entertainment.

The Mommy Insider, Dec 7, 2009

Grinchmas – This app is an officially licensed Dr. Seuss product. Grinchmas lets you be THE Grinch. If you are in a mean mood you can throw snowballs down at Who houses. If you are a merry Grinch you’ll get to deliver presents. It’s all done by the swipe of a finger. A fun little app to relieve frustrations after hitting the mall.

Dr. Seuss Camera: The Grinch Edition – Lately I’ve been feeling more like the Grinch than Mrs. Clause. This clever little app can actually make me look like part. You choose from twenty Grinch themed cards and then take a picture of yourself, or someone else, and add it to the card...

A new iPhone App that even the Grinch would love

I have to admit I'm a bit of an iPhone app addict, but even though the number of smart phone apps are growing into the hundreds of thousands I generally think that there are only a dozen or two that are worthwhile. The Dr. Seuss Camera--Grinch Edition iPhone app is totally one of those.

Select a card and use your built in camera to add yourself, or loved one to the picture. It's incredibly fun and easy...

Quick Review: ‘The Dr. Seuss Camera – The Grinch Edition’

Well this isn’t quite so much a game – although you can certainly derive some enjoyment from it! It’s basically a fun camera app that lets you capture faces, and then insert them in to a selection of themed cards in the app. You can even save and export your efforts, for sending later!

Of course, to match some of the Grinch characters, your face might need re-colouring – but don’t worry, the App manages this for you!
