Two Oceanhouse Media Apps Win Parents’ Choice Gold Awards

Thursday, October 31st, 2013

We are excited to announce that we have been selected for two 2013 Parents’ Choice Gold Awards, for “Ice is Nice!: All About the North and South Poles” and “On Beyond Bugs!: All About Insects”! The Gold Award is the highest honor awarded by the Parents’ Choice Foundation, and we are honored to be recognized with this prestigious award.

“Ice is Nice!” and “On Beyond Bugs!” are both a part of the Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library, a series that introduces children to basic science concepts including dinosaurs, maps, marine life, outer space and much more. The apps feature animated objects, instant glossary terms, and interactive diagrams to reinforce specific subjects, all led by classic Dr.

Seuss characters including the Cat in the Hat, Thing One and Thing Two, and even the fish! The Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library apps are meticulously designed to promote learning and encourage curiosity in young readers.

“Ice is Nice” invites readers  on an icy cold expedition to the North and South Poles! Children can mingle with native animals like reindeer, polar bears, and penguins and learn about concepts such as how the Earth’s orbit around the sun affects seasons. The Parents’ Choice Gold Award adds to a list of merits for this app, including an Editor’s Choice Award from the Children’s Technology Review.

“On Beyond Bugs!: All About Insects” teaches children everything there is to know about insects, from butterflies and crickets to fireflies and honeybees, exploring how they see, smell, communicate, and pollinate.

Eight other titles currently join “Ice is Nice” and “On Beyond Bugs!” in the Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library series in the App Store, with many more exciting subjects on the way!

Special thanks to everyone who was a part of the production of these award-winning apps, including Random House, Dr. Suess Enterprises, and the Oceanhouse Media team!

Oceanhouse Media’s Positive Adventure!

Tuesday, October 15th, 2013

Recently, the Oceanhouse Media team embarked on an adventure to Uplift, Educate, and Inspire as we celebrated the end of third quarter at the UCSD Ropes Challenge Course in La Jolla, CA! Led by our friends at Positive Adventures, our day of fun in the sun was full of overcoming challenges, team development, and endless smiles and laughs!

The adventure began the afternoon before the outing when our founder and CEO Michel Kripalani advised us to dress in comfortable clothes and close-toed shoes, but did not give us a clue as to where we were going or what we would be doing! Although we all pried for more information (some of us even attempting to use our expert internet skills to crack the mystery), we were all surprised to find out the next morning that we would be spending the beautiful sunny day taking our team-building to new heights (pun intended).

The UCSD Ropes Challenge Course is a state-of-the-art outdoor training gym located in the heart of the beautiful UCSD campus. Surrounded by budding eucalyptus plants and avid joggers, the course was the perfect setting and we lucked out with clear-blue skies and warm September weather. After lathering on the sunscreen and downing coconut water and kombucha, we were ready for our adventure to begin!

The program kicked off with a variety of team-building activities on the ground to help develop trust and communication. In one particular activity, we were lined up on a log and given the challenge to think of our favorite animal and then arrange ourselves from biggest animal to smallest animal without using human language or stepping off the log!

“They say everyone has a preferred communication style – usually it isn’t mimicking animal sounds while hop scotching over each other on a suspended log. Overall we did a great job on the challenge and quickly learned how important it is to be a versatile communicator!” – Natalie

After a quick lunch, it was time to take on the high ropes Odyssey Course! We geared up in harnesses and helmets and ascended the rope ladder one-by-one to two different platforms 35-55 feet high (talk about “uplifting”)!

As in any group, our team was a mix of phobic height-haters and fearless adrenaline-enthusiasts, but everyone was willing to fully participate and stretch his or her own limits. We spent the next few hours suspended above the ground, moving as a team across four different challenges, providing one another with a helping hand (literally) every step of the way.

“For me, the biggest challenge was not in completing the ropes course, but in completing it TOGETHER. Supporting, challenging and encouraging each other, both physically and verbally, became the focus of the exercise and where I feel I grew the most.” -Greg

One challenge even required that half the team be blindfolded and led by other half across a wire suspended high in the air, demanding complete trust and communication.

“Being able to trust your coworkers  walking on a wire and blindfolded at 40 feet makes it really easy to do so on the ground.” -Michael H.

The Odyssey Course ended with a soaring zip line, bringing us safely back down to the ground.

“Our day with Positive Adventures at the UCSD Ropes Challenge Course was a ton of fun. Dangling and maneuvering through the course, I learned just how close we are as a team.” -John

The importance of support and encouragement became immediately apparent throughout the experience, as we were able to overcome our fears and successfully complete each challenge together. At the end of the program, one of the facilitators noted that our team was exceptionally cohesive and passionate about helping each other out.

“Trusting one another and knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses can contribute greatly to a high performance, harmonic and cooperative team.” – Kim

“The support of our team and our ability to work together helped me tap into courage and strength I didn’t know I had.” -Chandler

It is safe to say that we unanimously give the UCSD Ropes Challenge Course and Positive Adventures 5 out of 5 stars! Thank you for the fun and inspiring experience!
